I care. The business side of me wants to provide the best product, yet provide the most profit. At $80 for shipping, it means a $700 sale suddenly turns into a paltry $100 profit. (Still nice, but it's quite a hit)

So you paid about $530 for them? I don't think you have much room to be complaining about profit if you didn't snag them at retail or below. Just my two cents.

$700 - ~$70 from ebay fees - ~$80 for shipping - ~$20 for PayPal fees = ~$530.

My SSD's are the only ones I have pre-packed.  They're my most valuable sets, and they're well protected in their shipping boxes.  I save all those air packets that amazon uses for packing material, and used those + recycled bubble wrap, should be good to go.

Be careful with the air pillows, this set is large enough that they could be popped by handling them.

No, I paid retail plus tax $433. Thus my assertion of $100 profit. Did I do some wrong math?

via which carrier? I think it would cost much less via FedEx and USPS. I shipped a huge Hasbro Vintage Collection Millennium Falcon for under $40 and it weighed like 22lbs.

I shipped one from Michigan to Cali via FedEx ground for 32$ .. Only one I sold as it came in a Walmart Nude Special .

Edit: I'm pretty sure we ran the numbers somewhere on this thread. It can be shipped for as little as $24. Pretty sure NMM provided some useful insight on that.

Did that number include the impending Fedex and UPS rate hikes next year ?

build an internal skeleton / brace inside the shipping box using cardboard from spare boxes.  place folded "L" shape pieces at the 4 corners and non-folded "-" pieces along the 4 sides and large "-" pieces in the bottom and top of the box).  i have pics somewhere as this is how many of my MISB sets are always packed and shipped.

also use that slightly twisted paper as packing material (or bubble wrap).

A sturdy shipping box (despite the heavier weight) is also encourage

I bought a few retired exclusives off Bricklink that were shipped this way.  They arrived minty fresh and I appreciated the extra care that was taken to protect my new set. Maybe I bought them off you...?

I was able to find one picture in my email account.  the other packing pics are on my iPhone and MacBook.

this packing pic of  a used UCS 10175 Vader Tie (no Lego box) with an internal skeleton. It's one of my first shipping attempts this was. i was a rookie but nevertheless, it arrived in Singapore without a problem.

i'm so much better at it now from reading posts on here and practice.  the key now is that i use longer pieces in the 4 corners and 4 sides (i don't always fold these; it depends on the cushion i want to create) plus the top and bottom.  i rarely use air pockets anymore.

The side L (right angle) cardboard corners need to be about the same height as the shipping box.  this way, it adds protection when  heavy boxes are stacked on top of it during transit.

This is a general idea how i would ship a 10221.

I guess my question is finding a way to minimize the size of the box, yet still offer the best protection. I know what the size of the SSD box is, but what size box would you buy to offer good protection while en-route, yet still keep box size to a level where you aren't at the $55-60 range for shipping.

So here is how I am Boxing up My SSD and Death Stars. I am using the 24"x8"x20" Box that you get at Staples or Uline Bundles of 25.Put a few layers of paper or Bumble wrap, Put the SSD in the Box, I take the paper and pack it all around the sides, put a few layers on the Top and then I put a Fed,Post office flat box on the top. Seal the box up. The weight is 19 lbs, 10 oz. Simple job. "As for how much shipping is if mailed in the US. I Live in baltimore Zip Code 21220 and I checked Fedex Site for me mailing it to Zip Code 90017 in Cal. Fedex Ground was $33.69 now thats not including insurance. So thats pretty cheap for going from the East Coast to West Coast. Ed

Took me longer to type the reply that find them. Each embedded video gets a unique code from Youtube... find the code and you can search across a topic or the forums. The code for the SSD video is avNfLo.

I hope my BOSS did not keep track :D :D :D

No doubt. I'm working from home a lot lately though so all my internet traffic goes through my home ISP. All of the company services I need are available via https so I don't need to VPN into work either.

To stay somewhat on topic, I've got 4 SSDs (one for me :)) and I've been contemplating putting one up on Kijiji for 2x what I paid - so for $850. Mine all come from the US (BL) or during TRU's BOGO so I paid on average $425 CDN a piece. They take up SOO much space. My storage room/closet is bursting at the seems with my recent Grimlock acquisitions. Are there any Canadians reading this topic who've had some success "flipping" these monsters for more than a measly $100?

Thanks Ed.  Great post.  Those uline boxes are solid.  I don't always use uline boxes so the cardboard corner braces help.  heck, sometimes I even reuse amazon and target boxes. with uline boxes, i still use my homemade corner braces :)

By the way, your FedEx Ground price is good.  The price would be 10% cheaper if you have a biz account.  The USPS Post Office quote would be much higher than $33.69.

Using the same 2 zip codes and box dimensions as you mentioned, UPS Ground will only cost 27.84 with $400 insurance with the entry level biz account.  Without the biz account, the price with insurance is $42.71.  Big difference, huh?

update and summary for shipping one 10221 from Balt (21220) to Cali (90017).

$400 insurance.

20 pounds.

24"x 8"x 20" Box

USPS Priority will cost $61.35 (buying online)

USPS Standpost =  $44.96.

UPS Ground = $27.84 (entry level biz account)

UPS Ground = $42.71 (no biz account)

Fedex Ground = $33.69 (no biz account & no insurance)

Fedex Ground = $30.32 (standard -10% biz account & no insurance)

You can try signing up for http://www.shipnex.com/express-shipping-rates.aspx?referral=254291040

It take about a day or two to activate the account.

It is like a business account. They offer discounted rates, usually for heavier stuff.

I shipped out 4 Mercedes struts at half the price I was quoted on UPS and Fedex online.

Shipnex still use Fedex and UPS just at a much lower price.

Shipnex also did not charge me Fedex pickup from home cost during my shipment.
