  • Holy Cow! Lego 70810 MetalBeard's Sea Cow is Up 40% in Just 2 Months

No quiet "moo moo" noises being heard regarding the 70810 MetalBeard's Sea Cow set.  It's quite impressive when any set increases over 40% from MSRP ($249.99) within only 2 months of "availability" *.

Currently, MISB prices are $350 on average (bricklink, amazon, ebay, brickpicker)
    * note: availability varied by region and retailer.

While most Lego collectors and investments were buying sets such as The Tumbler, Death Star, Pet Shop and UCS X-wing in the closing months of 2015, 70810 was quietly going in and out of stock before disappearing.   Not everyone was ignoring this set or quite by surprise of it's recent performance.  Check-out the forum topic for this set (link below).

So now that it's "retired", why the 40% jump in value in 2 months?  "Supply vs. Demand" in my opinion.

    • It appears Lego didn't produce as many 70810s as other Exclusive sets based on reported box tape seal codes.
    • Maybe the set lost it's initial appeal.  The Lego Movie debuted 2 years ago. Many of its features become available in cheaper sets such as 70816 Benny's Spaceship, Spaceship, SPACESHIP! and Emmit's 70818 Double-Decker Couch.  There was also a larger version of Metalbeard available (70807 The Movie MetalBeard's Duel)
    • The $250 cost was deemed too expensive.

We may never know why this set was ignored by many at retail.   One thing was certain, the majority of online 70810 reviews were  positive.

Regarding the long-term aspects, only time will tell if demand continues to make this set rapidly appreciate.  The upcoming Lego The Movie sequel will most help as well as if Metalbeard appears in other Lego movies (Ninjago, Batman, etc...).

Sea Cow is odd and that's what makes this one a winner in my book.  I didn't grab as many as I should have but I'm happy with my choice on qty

Don't forget taxes on the purchase, selling fees, and shipping charges.  The initial price jump is good news for investors.  I personally was not sold on this set and have none.  Reseller inventory should be fairly low on this one compared to other exclusives which will help anyone that is holding it.  I'll be curious to see how it performs throughout 2016.

Wonder how many of the buyers now are other investors hoping it hits $750?

I think most of those guys are still having the DS/R5/Tumbler tunnel vision.

I'm curious to see what it goes from here.  I'm more considering this the initial jump on a $250 exclusive set we see many times.

Exactly.  Let's see what demand is a year or two from now.  Who knows.  GL to those who bought.

It should probably be noted that both R5 and Tumbler are outselling Sea Cow on ebay EU by around 5 to 1 since Jan 1st.

I'm glad to see Sea Cow off to a good start, though I didn't buy any. I'm quite happy to have my money in R5 and Tumblers instead. The demand will stay high for those sets in the coming months and years.

You know how i feel about this set :) While the sudden spike is nice, I doubt it will continue long-term.

My reasoning is that the ship itself is GREAT but pretty much everything else included can be had in various cheaper sets.

Much like the Town Hall, i think the initial spike might be due to resellers who totally missed this set. That along with assumed lower production #s is prob where comparisons end.  The Town Hall will always have demand for those who like that theme or want to complete it.  Will the ship's awesome design and build carry this set's appreciation past <enter any # here above $500>. Only time will tell.

And probably more hoarded 10 to 1

Isn't that initial bump mostly fees and shipping, with maybe a little bit of profit? If prices on eBay are in the $350 range it doesn't mean that's what a seller actually gets, as I am sure you know. If you bought at MSRP, that's what the set was worth then. Now it is worth what you get _after_ fees and shipping - and that's quite a bit less.

Right now you'd make about $35 on ea set if you sold it for $350 with a buy in of $250 plus tax. 15% goes right to shipping/ebay fees/ PP fees....... Now once it hit $500 then we are looking at some real money.

bricklink lowest is at 450$ CDN, without shipping, and less lot fees than ebay, some on ebay even sold for 600$CDN...      this is a 300$CDN worth set..

Probably yeah. But I still think the demand/supply numbers will be in R5 and Tumblers favour over time.

Just grab what you can now and decide later if you want to flip or stash away.
