  • Are Lego Star Wars Rogue One and The Force Awaken's Millennium Falcon sets retiring this year?

    jaisonline

There were two interesting user comments in-response to CapnRex101's August 27th article, "What's Missing? Rogue One: A Star Wars Story" on brickset.com.

These comments were made by a LEGO set designer, Hans Burkhard Schlömer (aka BrickCommander). His posted comments are....

    brickcommander_quotes.jpg

Essentially Hans Burkhard Schlömer said the initial wave Rogue One sets such as his designed, Krennic's Imperial Shuttle, will be retiring this year. Then his next comment suggested the 75105 - Millennium Falcon will be replaced by the 75190 - First Order Star Destroyer as LEGO's next "BIG" non-UCS set.

Here is the list of Rogue One Wave 1 sets.

So what are your thoughts about the AFOL appeal and investment appeal of the proposed retiring sets?

I'd be surprised if the MF went as it's a good seller and will likely he in EP8 even though Han Solo ain't feeling too good ;-)

I though TLG employees had to respect confidentiality rules regarding this type of info. Posting on one of the most followed Lego fan forums seems a bit bizarre.

I do like Krennics Shuttle, IMO it will do well post retirement as long as it retires this year and Krennic does not show up in a cheaper set.

I think the Tie Striker could be a surprise as i think many including myself have wrote it off. However when it was 50% off I caved in.

Just hoping Lego don't do a massive run of them at the end of the year. The U Wing and AT-ST have been running thin in terms of stock during the past 6 weeks in the UK, here's hoping an early retirement.

The new way to battle resellers .. post hints at the sets that are retiring to ensure end-consumers have ample time to buy them.

(hah, that wouldn't work as consumers are stupid like that .. wait, wait, wait, oh shit it's gone, complain)

They´ll do a massive run of the Falcon, X wings and new TLJ sets. Old R1 stuff will probably retire by November and shops won´t be ordering many as they will devote shelf space to the new film merchandise.

I guess I could see them retiring the Falcon for about half a year and the releasing another for the Han Solo movie in September.  Kind of allows a "cooling off" period so anyone that bought the Force Awakens Falcon doesn't feel burned when the new one comes out.

I think I posted this in the 75105 thread, but it appears 75212 would be a good candidate as the replacement.

I'm picking up what you're putting down, I forgot that the Han Solo release date is in May.

I'm going to go on a wild tangent here, but I'm not sure the MF will be a part of the Han Solo wave.  I am going to take a wild guess here, but the film probably ends with the Kessel Run..

However, knowing Lego and Dizzney, they'll probably pull a death star and the design will be practically the same, with the old dish back in place, and just a change up of minis.  That wouldn't surprise me either.  So, when that guy says "buy an extra copy or more".... um yeah, fool me once...

I speculated 2 years ago after TFA came out that the movie sets would have a shorter shelf life due to them releasing new movies every year with a corresponding group of sets to back up those movies. The MF went a lot longer than I expected as did Poe's fighter and the TIE. but I think with TLJ and HS coming before the Summer sets, they have to clear a lot of shelf space. Rogue One however fits right in my proposed new timeline. As the films ramp up with Episode IX, the speculated Yoda, Obi-Wan and Boba Fett movies as well as whatever animated series comes next. We're going to see a lot of movement in the next few years.

Do the Rogue One sets have lasting power? I don't know. We have the AT-ST which will always have OT appeal, and it is a fine example of the vehicle. The other vehicles are likely to be buried under the giant pile of new designs that will be coming with the follow up movies. No matter how good they are, and I do actually like most of them, we may be reaching saturation. Look back to all the Clone Wars era sets that appeared in a small number of episodes, got made and then disappeared. Is there a lot of demand for all that stuff? I am not optimistic about future growth on the star wars properties. You need the more iconic sets like the UCS, but without them watering them down with remakes. The shorter shelf life may help out long term, but I kind of doubt any will realize 3-4X RRP. At best 2X RRP in 3 years is my feeling.

I would like to see them cut back on the amount of stuff being produced.  Back in the early part of this decade, they produced about 1/3rd less than they do now.  It would be nice to see them go back to that.  3 waves per year are overkill.  It was much better when it was two waves..

We don´t need or want a new playset Falcon any more than we need or want a new City Firestation and even those have a 3-year lifecycle. The current one  still fits in with TLJ and the Solo movie but they could well do another rehash with different minifigs for Episode 10, assuming it hasn´t crashed or been destroyed by then.

I think there should be an MF with the Han Solo movie. Just as there always has to a Death Star, there always has to be a playset MF. It is just selling too well, but it warrants updates to fit the most recent movie.

TLG will certainly have balls of steel if they retire two consecutive Falcons at Xmas without having an alternative available. The new Microfighter won´t be out till after Xmas and the big one will still be a SAH exclusive.

Went to my Target this morning and there was still a spot for the MF 75105.  I think this set will still be on the shelves through Christmas.

Today´s SAH sales give an idea of which sets are definitely retiring. There will be more, though.

i was thinking about the same exact thing.  many retailers have it on-sale for $115ish today.  lego rarely outs a popular set on-sale regardless of the 'holiday' / 'occasion' unless it's near the end.

There's just so much additional content now.  Rebels, Freemakers, multiple new movies w/ new vehicles... Tough to pick and choose

So many I'd still love to see produced from R1 - Hammerhead Corvette, Transport Shuttle, AT-ACT, Tantive IV, etc.  Where would they even attempt to squeeze them in?
