79003 - An Unexpected Gathering

Recommended Posts

It was tough to get these for anything near $40 until the BF/CM deals hit.  The best Amazon price ever for this was $46.75 this past weekend - prior to that it was $54 in October.

Whether it's retiring this year is anyone's guess.  I think it has another year since it's clearly the cream of the crop of the first Hobbit wave that's only been out one year, but you never know.

I don't think you'll be disappointed buying this at $40, even if you have to hold for 1+ years, although like anything it depends on your goals.

Hmm, I don't get it. While this is part of the hobbit line, it is still technically LOTR. If it was packaged under the LOTR line instead of Hobbit, do you think it would fare better? Thanks!

When I was a kid, LOTR is on the summer reading list. Not Hobbit. I know Tokkien wrote all the books and they are all great read. If Peter Jackson is content to sit around his mansion and party all day like a pornstar like Quintin Taratino or Bob Saget with the mountain of cash he made, these Hobbit movies would not be made. Try to get your hands on the 1st wave LOTR sets if you still can and speculate with the Hobbit set if you really have to. Your margin of safety is better and risk much lower with LOTR.

I agree, this is by far the best of the 1st wave Hobbit sets. It's the next one I am targeting now that the LOTR 1st wave sets are starting to move up in value.

The only things that link this set to the Hobbit move are the Dwarf minifigs. Remove these and you have a LOTR set. As it can be used for scenes from both books I think it will add to the value when it goes EOL.

The scene reminds me of a group of my fraternity brothers crashing the pledge room and drank all the booze, ate all the food and trashed the place. Then you got Gandalf standing in the corner smoking dope getting high on his pipe with those squinty eyes and a permanent smile not saying a word. I'll spend the money on a play scene with elfs and orcs cutting up each other.

The Hobbit, Lord of the Rings, one and the same really. Lot of this talk from naysayers sounds awfully similar to people going on about the original trilogy and prequel trilogy with Star Wars. Anyway, An Unexpected Gathering is one set which truly ties in to both The Hobbit and Lord of the Rings as it is Baggins 'little hole in the wall'.

Unexpected Gathering will do very well as a retirement set, in my opinion.  However, I don't believe it will retire in January.  Don't be fooled by the Walmart clearance,  they are just making shelf space for the new stuff.  Although not a huge set, 79003 is big enough that it takes up some pretty valuable real estate on shelves.  Historically, Walmarts and Targets, etc. have gotten rid of a lot of sets like this after one year.  This set will be around for a while, no need to panic yet.

No longer available on ToysRUs.ca (which is big for the Canadian market). Perhaps it will come back, but the only Hobbit set from the first line currently available is Barrel Escape. We`ve seen it done in the past, sets are clearenced then restocked in the future, but honestly not sure about this one. Maybe they will want to carry only the second wave from now on. Really is a bit of a coin toss here I think.

Is Barrel Escape an exclusive in North America? It is in the UK, hence it's high aftermarket price over here.

ToysRUs exclusive yes. They`ve of course marked it up to $54.99 as opposed to Lego`s $49.99 + VIP. Nice set for sure, may sell well with Orc Forge in the future as a combo pack.

in case it wasn't mentioned bag end if in both series of movies, so which this set is tailored for The Hobbit, it also works perfectly fine for a LOTR theme of sets as well. Also, for those into the castle theme there always has been a lack of medieval town buildings, like homes, barns, shops etc... this set will be popular just because of that void alone.

Yeah but ''sadly'' this is not a regular building for medieval... it fits Hobbit/LOTR universe and then I personally would have troubles imagening it next to MMV or MVR :)

It is just a totally different lvl of building and type.

I actually have my Bag End as part of my medieval village, just got to have a good imagination :paladin:

I don't think it this will affect the aftermarket value though. :)

Omy to Missouri for work and just stopped at a Walmart that had 10 of these on the shelf at 49. Thought about it and I may still on the way back. Whenever that will be.

My Walmart also has these at $49.  Thoughts on that price?  They've been there forever and most likely will be after Christmas too.  Wondering if they'll clearance furthur.

I bought 20 at that price during the summer clearance a few months ago. To the best of my knowledge, that is when walmart first brought them down to $49. If they have been sitting on your walmart's shelf since summer at that price, then at this point I would gamble and wait until the 26th when the after Christmas clearance should take place. You might luck out and get them at an even better price. How many did they have? If there are a lot, buy the amount you want now, leave the others to see what happens to them after Christmas, and if they lower the price return the ones you bought ahead of time for a price adjustment. This set will be worth all the hassle three years from now.

They had 7-8, they were marked down at summer clearance, but they haven't been touched.  Fairly small town and all.

Not to hijack but how does the price adjustment process work with clearance items like that.  Can I just return them day of the sale and rebuy them?  Unethical?
