The Old Workhorse - Traction Engine

Recommended Posts

Thought I would add a couple of new pictures of my Traction Engine model. Here it is alongside one of my other creations. A vintage mail van, loosely based on a British 1950's Morris J Type Commercial van.

THE "LITTLE" WORKHORSE

Mini Build and Free Instructions

Hi everyone

I've created a mini version of The Old Workhorse, made up from just 82 bricks. I've made the instructions freely available under the "Updates" tab on my Lego Ideas page. https://ideas.lego.com/projects/2a2ec583-9836-4868-8dc7-6b3bb0a2fe80/updates#content_nav_tabs

Please feel free to use these instructions and have a go at building the model yourselves. The only thing I'd like to ask in return is if you could please support my LEGO Ideas project whilst you're there. :classic: Hope you like this fun miniature version and enjoy building it.

I'm really excited today to say my Lego Ideas model is featured in the latest issue of Blocks magazine, with a double page spread and interview with me. 😁 The magazine is in stores from today. You will also notice a brick built version of the traction engine in the picture below - more on that soon!

As well as this I was also featured in the Leicester Mercury newspaper last weekend. A picture of the model was splashed across the front page with a full page article on page 3. You can read the article online here. https://www.leicestermercury.co.uk/news/local-news/train-enthusiasts-lego-model-design-2002147

Congratulations, I just hope that LEGO listen (for once!) and get this product on the shelves. Oh... how much do you want for one if you have the instructions ready - PM please 😉

Haha, Yeah, wish it could have shared the cover with something better than that hideous story.

Thanks, although Lego wont even look at the model if I don't get enough votes.

You've put a lot of work into this and have earned this publicity.  I would buy one I think this looks fantastic.

Thanks very much, I'm definitely trying to put as much effort as possible in to this!

Are you going to be exhibiting at BrickLive in Birmingham?

Lego seem to love featuring Ideas sets "in the wild".

If that's the case, I really fear for the future of the human species. If it was a steam powered helicopter, it'd be a dead cert.

Brilliant our very own Lego ideas creator here on site, will be posting my set to you when it comes out for your signature.

This set definitely gets my nod, will  let my very large extended family in on the details of the set.

Good luck, voting now.

I hadn't thought of that. I wonder how I'd go about arranging that? Will look in to it.

Well by far the most popular models on LEGO Ideas seem to be the sets based on space. So if all else fails perhaps this should be my contingency plan. 😆😆😆

That's still 100x better than what Disney and the oompaloompas in Billund can come up with for the new wave of Star Wars sets.

Traction Engine - Brick Built Version

Hi everyone. I've recently completed work on a brick built version of The Old Workhorse Traction Engine. I've had to swap some colours around to reflect Lego parts and colours that are currently in production. I've also made a few minor improvements to the design of the model which I will detail below. For now I've only built the Traction Engine portion of the set but I'm working on the wagon and other bits so I will post pictures of those too when they're complete.

Apart from the colour scheme, probably the most noticeable change to the design is the new style funnel. I've redesigned this to have the appearance of a brass cap and a tapered shape towards the top which is more true to how a real traction engine funnel should look. I've also redesigned some of the details on top of the boiler, behind the funnel to appear more realistic and to give added stability.

For the brick built version I decided to use a 2 tone colour scheme for the main body. The lower half is in earth green and the upper section of the cab and boiler are dark green. Unfortunately the spoked wheels are not available in red so I used reddish brown instead. I'm pleased with how the new colour scheme has worked out, it has quite a rustic look. My preference would still be for the model to be produced in the livery used in the original rendered model though, if ever it was lucky enough to go all the way on LEGO Ideas. :sweet: I do think the lighter shade contrasts nicely with the gold though. Let me know what you think.

Hope you like this brick built version of the model. Please feel free to let me know what you think. There are more pictures in my Flickr album including a short video clip of the model.

If you like the model I'd also be really grateful if you could please give it your support over on LEGO Ideas if you've not done already. Thanks very much. :classic:

Thanks very much, glad you like the way I presented the images. To be honest I think image presentation is almost as important as the model design itself, especially with something like LEGO IDEAS.

Well I keep persevering and am trying to get as many votes as I can.

If anyone on here is signed up to LEGO IDEAS you should have received the latest e newsletter from them yesterday. You may have noticed that I am featured in it with an article about an exhibition I took the model to a couple of weeks ago.

I took the model to a steam toy exhibition at Mountsorrel Heritage Centre in the UK where it was displayed in their railway museum. You can see in the pic above I even went as far as making my own "PLEASE VOTE" T shirt. 😁

Your presentation skills, creativity and determination are to be commended. Below is the ultimate compliment for this project:

"TabbyBoy will ACTUALLY PAY RRP for this set!"

... and I mean it 😉
