Building the 75059 Sandcrawler

Just completed bag 12.

Not many more left.

Main 4 side flaps / doors are installed along with the front main entrance door and crane. The door is opened and closed with a technic wheel that looks out of place. While the chains are a nice look, I would have preferred a manual lift. Additionally, the turn wheel is a tad hard to twist.

Bags 12 and 13 are for the Sandcrawler's bow. The design really shines here and is much simpler than 10144.

Snap elements are used to connect the inward angled to the main body. Then simple ball joints are used to connect the up and outward angled portion.

So I followed this thread with lots of enthusiasm. It's a great build.

I downloaded the manual off LEGO's web site just to see how it goes. Towards the end of the manual, there's some promotional photos. And guess what, they placed the B-wing 10227 there. That set is already EOL, for brick's sake. What were they trying to troll us?!?

Thanks for the PDF manual reference. I've been waiting for that :). With larger sets, I prefer using my iPad or laptop for zooming and taking up less space on my building table. Also looks like more languages are in the A4 one.

Interesting difference between the US and non-US (A4 sized paper) manuals. Like my printed manual, the US downloadable manual doesn't contain promo pages near the end. However, the A4 PDF has them.

Anyone know if the Non-US manual has these promo pics (UCS B-Wing, UCS x-Wing, UCS R2 and Ewok Village)?

With regards to the 10227 B-Wing promo page, it was included within the A4 version prob because it was prob too late to change it (maybe went to the presses before the US letter one). 10227 wasn't expected to retire after 14 months at retail. Lego has at least 2 year life-cycles with licensed themed sets unless it's a slow seller (e.g. last year's exclusive TRU Hoth set and 2012

I wouldn't have been able to do that.  Good thing that it was very sturdy or else it would have turned into a pile of bricks.

Oh, I tested it out before lifting it 5 feet off the ground. The base is very strong and the technic elements use on the front pillars offers excellent support.

Cleaning up that mess would have been a nightmare after finding all of them on the hardwood floor. I would have needed a search team.

Below are some pics.

At least with my printed manual, seems to have quite a bit of errors. For example, on page 259 (pic attached), it states 1 reddish brown 3 stud long wedge will be need. In reality, 4 are needed. These steps mirror page 242 (same area but opposite side) and that lists the proper amount of elements needed.

Additionally, one bag came with 1 reddish brown single stud but it wasn't used. I never ran into that before. Then again, 90% of my larger built sets were bought used. The 10220 VW van is the largest set I built from a new / sealed box.

Cockpit done and C3PO is in sight. Ugh, that sticker...

Still, much better cockpit this time around than in 10144. Although I wish 76059 had transparent elements in the front.

Comparison sneak peak although Brick Show beat me to it since they had 76059 before me :). ...and no. The pic below is not a still of "Brokeback Tatooine Mountain : The Utinni Edition". I know, some silly humor. No offense to anyone. I just wanted to show the difference with 2 Jawas in each cockpit.

Looking awesome so far, but as we all know, everything is... well you get the joke.

I think this will be a set I get in the very near future, and this has definitely influenced my decision! Whether or not, some would argue, is a good one! Ha ha ha.

If I wasn't such a Jawa and Sandcrawler nut, I would have waited for the next 2x VIP event or bought it with my Amazon points or Target red card. I just had to have this. Heck, I was going to even drive down to Delaware to buy it instead of King of Prussia but had second thoughts. Driving an extra 12 miles each way to save cash didn't make much sense with a 18 month old in the car (my son is fine with mostly any road trip).

When it's not in play with my son, this Sandcrawler will join the other ones plus the he MOC AFA Vinyl Cape Jawa on display.

In summary, I didn't want to buy this set. I needed to buy this set. That's the reason this build is going to be done spread over 3 days while 10179 took 40 days or so

Putting "the boy" to work with a supervisor watching over his shoulder. He's even wearing an original trilogy t-shirt. My daughter took out her hair clips and I have no idea how to put them back in so her Wookie do is in full effect. Talk about "girl power".

Final build steps have officially started.

Wow, what a build! Do you have any large, popular, set we can compare the size of the set with? Also, how large is the main interior bay?

I'll be comparing it to 10144, Kenner Sandcrawler, and a couple of others. 10179 is too big to haul around for a nice picture.

Wow great comparison. Makes the old version look chubby.

Indeed. The old Sandcrawler looks fat, short, and blocky while the new redesign is freakin' amazing in every conceivable way! Amazing how much can be changed with the skills learned and new bricks designed over time. Who knew such a large hunk of junk could be so beautiful? Ha.

Here are 3 comparison pictures of Jawa minifigs from 10144 and 75059.

The 10144 figure is always in the center.

Details :

  1. same height, hood, and overall color (reddish brown)
  2. 75059 omits the cape.
  3. same black head but different eyes.  10144 are smaller.
  4. 10144 does not offer back print under the cape.  75059 offer double sides upper body print.  additionally, the newer figures offer a 3D style chest print (mainly on the bandolier's pockets.  the older Jawa has a 2D design
  5. 10144 had reddish brown hands while 75059 has dark brown.
